In this Final Fantasy game you play through a unique storyline and gain very nice abilities throughout the game.The is no real lvl-up system within this game but u gain "CP" (class points) every time u win a battle.Entering battle is like in XII but it enters it like every other Final Fantasy game(as if you have entered a random battle).
